The Chicago Fire currently reside in the top spot in the MLS Standings, and as a result, they are going to be well-represented at the league’s All-Star Game later this summer.
A pair of Fire stars will be on the pitch when the MLS All-Stars take on Real Madrid at Soldier Field on Aug. 2, including midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. The talented German joined the Fire earlier this season, and he’s made an immediate impact on the team as his precise passing and quick shot have helped add a whole new dimension to the team’s offense.
“It’s special,” Schweinsteiger told the Chicago Tribune. “To be invited and to have the game in Chicago, it’s really a great feeling.”
Schweinsteiger will be joined in the staring 11 by ace striker Nemanja Nikolic, who is leading Major League Soccer with 16 goals in the early going this season.
Nikolic, who scored a goal in Wednesday’s draw against Portland, could threaten the MLS single-season scoring record if he keeps up his current pace, and he has been instrumental in the club’s success thus far.
Kaka, David Villa, Tim Howard, and Michael Bradley all made the starting 11, which was decided upon by a fan vote. Sebastian Giovinco, Miguel Almiron, Greg Garza, Graham Zusi, and DaMarcus Basley will also be in the starting lineup for the game.
