A gun battle outside a West Side apartment building caused two schools to be placed on lockdown in the West Side, and the suspect(s) is still at large, according to police.
It was not immediately clear how many gunmen were involved. After a gun battle between combatants, at least one suspect ran into a nearby school building, according to reports from the scene.
At least one weapon was recovered at the scene and detectives found a number of shell casings, a Harrison District lieutenant said.
It was not immediately known whether the schools were still on lockdown, or which specific schools were affected. A private preschool and kindergarten, as well as a private art school, are located nearby.
The standoff began in a courtyard between buildings at 3306 and 3310 W. Madison St. about 1 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Kevin Kilmer said.
A U.S. Marshal was traveling in the 3300 block of West Madison Street when they heard "loud reports," according to STNGwire, and saw a group of people run into the 3310 West Madison building.
A police team cleared people from the building by 3:25 p.m., Kilmer said.
