After a spotless career spanning three decades, Schaumburg Police Chief Brian Howerton finds himself under investigation, accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend.
"It would be an increased level of him calling and driving by her house and driving by places where she was, and showing up places where she was -- restaurants, kids' events, other places -- stuff like that," said Dawn Davis' attorney, Kaci Holguin.
Davis filed an administrative complaint against Howerton back in March, accusing him of abusing his position and stalking her during their 18-month relationship. The attorney said some of the calls were made with Howerton's work-issued cell phone, and that he drove around in his squad car and would visit Davis wearing his police uniform.
Asked about the allegations Tuesday, Howerton declined to comment because the case in remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
But for now, village officials are standing behind their chief.
"The village has not yet received the results of ISP's investigation. However, after four months of interviews and investigation by the ISP and the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, there has been no indication that any of the allegations made by the complainant have been substantiated," said Village Manager Ken Fritz.
