Severe Weather Possible as Cold Front Moves Through Area

After one of the wettest springs on record, meteorological summer is going to get off to a soggy start as showers and thunderstorms are expected to hit the area on Saturday afternoon.

June 1 marks the start of what meteorologists consider to be summer, but it’s going to be more like a spring day in the Chicago-area. High temperatures will be pleasant, moving into the mid-to-high 70s, but a cold front will bring the chance for some potentially severe weather in the late afternoon hours.

After a brief isolated threat of rain in the late morning, skies will clear, but a cold front is expected to drop across the area around 5 to 6 p.m. That front is likely to spark thunderstorms, some of which may be severe, and will move through quickly into the evening hours.

There is a low threat of tornadoes with the storms, but damaging winds and large hail are possible, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

Once the cold front moves through, drier air will settle into the area for the remainder of the weekend. On Sunday, temperatures are expected to only reach the high 60s, and areas along the lake could be even cooler as winds shift following the passage of the front.
