Public transportation services could be reduced as early as July.
The Regional Transportation Authority said it could be forced to make cuts to Chicago Transit Authority, Metra, and Pace services if the state fails to pay part of the approximately $400 million owed to the RTA, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune.
The RTA sent a letter to Governor Pat Quinn's office explaining that they exhausted their ability to borrow money and would need to bridge their cash shortfalls by diverting money from day-to-day operations.
The cutbacks would dramatically impact over two million daily riders and 15,000 employees, according to the RTA.
