End of the Road for Del Negro

Reports: Vinny Del Negro out as Chicago head coach

Is Vinny Del Negro DONE?!

The Chicago Bulls have called a news conference for noon Tuesday, and all signs indicate the head coach has been fired.

Del Negro was handed his walking papers following meetings with owner Jerry Reinsdorf and GM Gar Forman, according to published reports.

Del Negro took over the helm at the United Center two years ago, with no head coaching experience. He went on to lead the Bulls to a record of 82-82, with two straight post-season appearances. Along the way he earned the respect of the players.

"I endorse Vinny," said Chicago Bulls Forward Joakim Noah.  "He did a lot for me as a player. He gave me my chance to play, so I have nothing but good things to say about him."

While with the Bulls, Del Negro helped develop several young players. In his meeting with Reinsdorf on Sunday, Del Negro pointed to Derrick Rose’s all-star appearance and Taj Gibson’s All-Rookie selection as proof his system works, the Chicago Tribune reported.

"We had a loose group and Vinny kind of fit the bill for us," said Chicago Bulls Guard Kirk Hinrich.

Del Negro still has one-year and about $2 million left on his contract.

One possible replacement for his job includes Doug Collins, a man Reinsdorf passed on two years ago.

"Whoever’s the coach, that’s who’s gonna be in charge and who’s gonna lead us next year," said Chicago Bulls Forward Loul Deng.
