Beachgoers heading to Lake Michigan are being advised to stay ashore, as an increased rip current advisory remains in effect until Saturday night.
"Waves will be at about five to eight feet, so definitely use caution if you are heading to the beach or the water," said NBC 5 Meteorologist Cheryl Scott Saturday morning.
The increased rip current advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, remains in effect until 10 p.m. Satuday. It was initially issued on Friday and several beaches along Lake Michigan were closed.
The warning stretches from Lake County all the way south to Indiana. The National Weather Service describes rip currents as powerful channels of water quickly flowing away from shore in low spots of the water or breaks in a sandbar.
All the beaches in the city are currently open but swim advisories are in effect for Calumet, Rainbow, South Shore, Oakwood, 31st Street, 57th Street, North Avenue, Osterman, Lane and Humboldt Park beaches, according to the Chicago Park District's website.
However, Evanston's beaches remain closed to swimmers for the second day in a row, according to a press release from the city. The sand area for the dog beach at Church Street was reopened but dogs are not permitted in the water, the release said.
