Ringing Cellphone Leads to Robbery Suspects

Anthony Sutherland, 21, and Derrick Ewing, 20, are accused of attempting to rob a pizza delivery driver on two separate occasions

A ringing cellphone led to the arrest of two Chicago men suspected of trying to rob a pizza deliveryman for a second time.

Chicago police say Anthony Sutherland, 21, of the 6700 block of South Chappel, and Derrick Ewing, 20, of the 8000 block of South Kingston, were charged Friday with attempted armed robbery. Both are being held in lieu of $450,000 bail.

The Chicago Tribune reports Cook County court documents indicate that on Dec. 5, two men robbed a deliveryman. On Jan. 14, the victim told police he was robbed by someone using the same phone number just used to place an order.

Police accompanied the victim on a delivery run. As Ewing and Sutherland approached, the victim called the number used in the December incident, causing Ewing's cellphone to ring.

Cook County public defender Todd Chatman had no comment on the charges filed against Ewing and Sutherland.
