Reward Offered to Find Fatal Hit-And-Run Driver

Schaumburg teen killed in accident over weekend

A Schaumburg family is pleading for information to help find the driver of a vehicle that hit a teen over the weekend and fled the scene.

Mikias T. Tibebu, 18, was walking near Schaumburg Road and Branchwood Drive around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when he was hit.

Schaumburg police and Tibebu's family held a news conference Thursday to discuss the case.

The family is offering a $10,000 for information leading to the driver's whereabouts.

"Our heart's broken. The family is devastated," Dr. Tefera T. Beyene said. "He could have been a model citizen. He could have been a good leader."

Police say they believe Tibebu may have been laying in the road when he was hit, but aren't sure why. They also believe the driver must have aware that they had hit something before leaving the scene.

"We don't know if he tripped and fell. We don't know if he had a medical issue and came to the ground," Schaumburg Police Sgt. John Nebl said.

Tibebu was with friends just 5 minutes before the accident. Thursday would have been the final interview for college admittance and scholarships for the victim, who was active on the Schaumburg High School cross country and track teams. His teammates have been passing out flyers over the past couple of days, hoping to find clues in the investigation.

Students were excused from class Wednesday to attend Tibebu's funeral.

A memorial will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the high school for students, parents and the victim's family.
