Reports: John Lausch Confirmed as New U.S. Attorney

According to multiple reports, the city of Chicago has its newest United States Attorney.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times’ Lynn Sweet and the Chicago Tribune’s Katherine Skiba, John Lausch was unanimously confirmed Thursday as the new U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

Lausch, a partner at Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago, was an assistant U.S. Attorney for 10 years, and spearheaded numerous initiatives during his time in office.

Lausch’s nomination will become official when his commission is signed by President Donald Trump, but it’s unclear when that will occur as the president is currently on an overseas trip to Asia.

Former U.S. Attorney Zachary Fardon stepped down in March after the Trump administration demanded that all 46 remaining U.S. attorneys resign their posts. The president announced Lausch’s nomination for the role in August, and the decision was praised by several politicians, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

“I want to congratulate John Lausch on his appointment as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois,” Emanuel said in a statement. “John brings a strong public safety background to the office, and it is my hope that he will use the power of that office to increase the federal prosecution of gun crimes in Chicago and strengthen public safety in our communities.”
