Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre spent nearly two decades as public enemy No. 1 to Chicago Bears fans, but according to a new report out Wednesday, he came close to changing sides in the historic rivalry.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, Favre seriously considered coming to the Bears during the 2008 offseason after he retired from the Packers. Here is part of King’s anecdote on how the whole situation went down:
“He said he still wanted to play. He said he was thinking of asking for his release so he could play somewhere else. Chicago or Minnesota, maybe. I told him I didn’t think the Packers would release him so he could torment them from within the division…
“Thompson asked Favre for a list of teams he’d agree to be traded to. Favre wouldn’t give him one. If Favre couldn’t go to Minnesota or Chicago, his preference was to force Thompson’s hand, and come back to play quarterback for the Packers.”
Favre ended up making a comeback that summer, and eventually the Packers traded him to the New York Jets.
