Woman Shot by Off-Duty Detective Dies

Rebia Boyd, of the 1500 block of South California, was shot early Wednesday morning

A 22-year-old woman shot by an off-duty police detective during a confrontation early Wednesday in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood has died, authorities said.

Rebia Boyd, of the 1500 block of South California was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday. Her death comes hours after another man shot by the detective, 39-year-old Antonio Cross, was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault.

The detective was driving at about 1:05 a.m. near the 3100 block of West 15th Place when he noticed several people causing a disturbance, police said.

The officer rolled down his window to investigate and saw Cross approach him with a handgun, they said.

"The officer announces, 'Police, drop the gun,' but the offender continues to advance on him," said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden on Wednesday. "At that point the officer fires in fear of his life."

Cross and Boyd were both struck by bullets.

Cross was also hospitalized, but was treated and released from the hospital earlier in the day Thursday. He was released on a personal recognizance bond and will next appear in court April 11, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

One of Cross' family members told NBC Chicago Wednesday his cousin had a cell phone, not a gun.

Area Central detectives and the IPRA are investigating.
