Rauner Says New Jersey is “Going Down the Drain”

Rauner said he does not want to compete with New Jersey on anything, particularly concerning high property taxes

Gov. Bruce Rauner has some harsh words for Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who campaigned hard for Rauner's election last year.

Last week, the Illinois governor said New Jersey "is lost." During an Illinois Farm Bureau conference, Rauner compared the two states, saying Illinois has the highest property taxes in America after New Jersey. Despite the help Christie gave Rauner during his election campaign, Rauner said he doesn't want to compete with New Jersey on anything — especially that.

"They're going down the drain, and they ain't turning it around," Rauner said.

Rauner defeated Democratic incumbent Pat Quinn in November with the help of the Republican Governors Association. Christie served as the association's chair and traveled to Illinois repeatedly to campaign with Rauner.

Spokesmen for Rauner and Christie have not returned messages left Monday seeking comment.
