Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, 7th Ward Alderman Greg Mitchell, and other dignitaries cut the ribbon on a newly remodeled athletic facility on the city’s South Side Sunday.
The park, Eckersall Stadium and Athletic Fields in the city’s South Chicago neighborhood, will now feature an artificial turf football field, a remodeled track, and areas to host discus, high jump, pole vault, and shot put competitions, the city announced.
“Eckersall Park is a great asset to the community, which will only be strengthened by the investment to make the stadium a high-quality recreational facility for residents on the South Side,” Emanuel said in a statement.
Chicago Public Schools also participated in the renovation of the stadium, which is expected to host community events and will also host Special Olympics competitions, according to the city.
The renvoation was part of the city’s “Building on Burnham” plan, which has renovated nearly 1,000 acres of parks and 5.5 miles of waterfront since it started in 2011.
