Quinn: Follow the FoIA

The new Illinois governor has issued a new order on releasing public information: Do it.

Gov. Pat Quinn sent a memo to state agencies Wednesday telling them that requests under the state Freedom of Information Act must be considered valid unless the law clearly requires that the information be kept secret.

He said the state should comply with both the letter and the spirit of the law, which is filled with loopholes allowing government documents to be withheld from the public.

Quinn also ordered agencies to study what information can be made available online and report findings within 45 days.
