Thousands of Chicago-area homeowners are set to receive property tax refunds – and they won’t need to do anything for it.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced Monday that $24.6 million in refunds are set to go out to 25,000 homeowners in the county.

“Nearly 90 percent of the refunds will be issued without an application,” Pappas said in a statement.

Most of the refunds will go to homeowners receiving property tax exemptions, Pappas said.

The first round of refunds will be distributed through July 26 as a credit to banks and credit cards of those who paid by check or online earlier this year. Those who paid through a bank or mortgage escrow account will receive a refund check by Aug. 23. And those who paid in cash will be mailed a refund application by July 26.
