Promising Young Student Gunned Down on Far South Side

An 18-year-old honors student was gunned down on the city’s Far South side, and his family is in mourning after his tragic death.

James Garrett, who was a student at Butler College Prep, was at an outdoor gathering in the 13200 block of South Prairie just after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night when a verbal altercation broke out at the party. An unidentified woman and man pulled out guns during the argument and opened fire, striking Garrett and two other victims.

Garrett was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

“He had ambition, goals, and dreams,” his aunt said. “He was a great example for his cousins and sister. He wasn’t in the streets. He wasn’t gang-banging.”

The other two victims, a 48-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, were also taken to local hospitals, and their conditions have stabilized.

No one is in custody, and Area South Detectives are investigating the shooting.
