For those looking for work, relief may come soon.
Canada-based Potash Corpation announced Tuesday it plans to open a new distribution facility in Gibson Yard in Hammond, Ind.
The fertilizer company and Indiana Harbor Belt are expected to spend $73 million for a new 136,000 square-foot transfer facility, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.
More than 120 people were hired by the Indiana Harbor Belt to start prepping the site with new railroad tracks for the facility.
The company predicts it will create 300 construction jobs and 25 permanent employees for the Potash warehouse.
"A lot of people are fighting for jobs like theose that are coming to Hammond, Ind., right now," as told to the Times by Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. McDermott says construction jobs will be filled by union workers.
Hammond beat out four other cities for the Potash relocation. City officials believe the deal will generate more than 3.2 million in taxes during construction and more than 16 million for the next 20 years.
Construction is set to begin in the spring and completed by 2014.
