Portage Park armed carjacking leads to charges against 19-year-old

The teen allegedly led police on a brief pursuit before being apprehended Tuesday, police said

Chicago police have announced a series of felony charges against a 19-year-old accused of stealing a car at gunpoint in the Portage Park neighborhood.

According to authorities, a 20-year-old man and a 47-year-old man were in the 4000 block of North Laramie at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when the suspect stole their vehicle at gunpoint.

The suspect then allegedly led police on a chase before being apprehended in the first block of West Garfield Boulevard approximately 45 minutes after the incident.

Armahn Johnson, a Chicago resident, was arrested and charged with multiple felony counts of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm. He was also charged with aggravated fleeing police, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon without a FOID card, and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a person under the age of 21, police said.

He will face a detention hearing on Thursday in connection with the case.

No further information was immediately available on the investigation.
