4 in Custody After Home Invasion Leads to Barricade Situation in Matteson

What started as an armed robbery and home invasion ended with a barricade situation in south suburban Matteson Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Police believe four suspects were involved in the armed robbery of three victims in a home invasion about two blocks away from the barricade scene, according to Matteson Police Chief Michael Jones. The suspects, who police say knew the victims, brandished handguns and demanded money before taking cash and a cell phone and fleeing on foot.

No one was hurt in the robbery, but police say the four suspects ran to a home in the 3600 block of 211th Place, where one innocent juvenile was inside.

The South Suburban Emergency Response Team responded to the area and began negotiations.

After a few hours, the suspects voluntarily surrendered were taken into custody, Jones said. The juvenile was not hurt, according to authorities.

Several departments along with SWAT officers responded to the scene in the residential area.

Residents in the area were being told to stay in their homes, many saying they were shocked to find fully armed police with weapons drawn pacing the block.

Police said a local daycare was placed on lockdown "for precautionary safety purposes."

"This is an isolated and targeted crime," Jones said in a statement. "The scene has been secured and there is no danger to the public."
