Police: Man Strangled Woman, Shot Own Father

A man is in custody Sunday morning after allegedly going on a murderous rampage in the city and south suburbs.

The man is suspected of strangling a woman in south suburban Steger, fatally shooting another woman on Chicago's South Side and shooting his father in south suburban Maywood.

About 1:15 a.m. Saturday, police found a woman dead in the 5300 block of South Marshfield Avenue with a gunshot wound to her head, according to police News Affairs.

The woman was identified as Stephanie Reed, 40, the Marshfield address where she was found, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

According to a police source, the man who shot Reed has been linked to a strangling death in Steger and a shooting in south suburban Maywood. A suspect was in police custody Sunday, according to Wentworth Area detectives.

Around 3 a.m. Saturday, 38-year-old Tashika Smith was strangled to death in her Steger home by a man police believe was her boyfriend, authorities said.

That same man shot his father in Maywood some time after 11 p.m. Friday, Maywood police Lt. Donald Mobley said.

The father survived, Mobley said.

The man suspected in Smith's killing did not break into the home in the 300 block of West 35th Street, Steger Police Chief Richard Stultz said.

The man had not been charged as of 11 a.m. Sunday and further details were not immediately available.
