Driver Shot Multiple Times on Eisenhower Expressway During Rush Hour

Illinois State Police said it's investigating after someone was shot multiple times while driving on the Eisenhower Expressway during rush hour traffic Friday morning.

Police said the shooting happened around 8 a.m. on Interstate 290 at Central and involved two cars.

The driver of a minivan was shot on the expressway and attempted to drive himself to a friend's house but called for medical help before he arrived. The person suffered a graze wound to the head and was shot "multiple times," according to Captain David Byrd with the Illinois State Police.

The driver was listed in stable condition at an area hospital.

The far right two lanes of the expressway were shut down at Central but the ramp to Central remained open.

Police have asked for the public's help, asking anyone who may have seen a blue jeep Cherokee with dark, tinted windows driving erratic to call police.

State police say there have been more than 26 shootings on area expressways this year.

"It is a spike," Byrd said. "We've added extra patrols in midnight hours."

Officials say the shootings typically happen between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

"Unfortunately a rush hour shooting, there's not much more we could be doing," Byrd said.

The number of shootings this year has already surpassed the total number of expressway shootings from 2014.

Illinois State Police data showed that only 19 shootings were reported in 2014 and 16 were reported in 2013.

Officials have not said whether there is a suspected cause for the rise in expressway shootings, but noted that many appear to be gang-related.
