4 in Custody After Miles-Long Chase That Began in Coal City Ends at McCormick Place

Authorities said no one was injured and four suspects were in custody in Grundy County, where they are expected to face charge

A chase that began in far southwest suburban Coal City continued for miles before ending in parking lot at Chicago’s McCormick Place Tuesday morning.

Around 1:30 a.m., police said they saw a suspicious vehicle stopped and running in the 300 block of North Shabanna in Coal City. Officers learned the vehicle was reported stolen in Naperville and saw a passenger jump in the car before it sped off.

Sgt. Thomas Logan with the Coal City Police Department said the vehicle traveled through the town without using turn signals, nearly colliding with another squad car before fleeing at 90 mph.

Police later found the vehicle in an area parking lot, but the suspects fled again, this time traveling onto Interstate 55 at over 100 mph, Logan said.

Coal City police eventually stopped pursuing the vehicle before Channahon and Will County authorities took over the chase. Both agencies later stopped the chase before Darien authorities spotted the car on Route 83.

Illinois State Police then began pursuing the vehicle, which fled to downtown Chicago before coming to a halt at McCormick Place.

Authorities said no one was injured and four suspects were in custody in Grundy County, where they are expected to face charges.
