Prospect Heights police arrested the teen who survived a deadly crash

The 17-year-old boy who survived a deadly car crash in Prospect Heights has been charged in connection with the accident.

Prospect Heights police arrested Daniel Ascencio on Thursday and charged him with criminal trespass to a motor vehicle, police said. He has since been released into the custody of his father.

Ascencio told police that he and the three others got together, drank beer and smoked pot before they went looking for unlocked cars to steal items.

It appears one of the girls found a 2002 silver Honda Accord with the keys inside, then took it for a joyride with all the teens before it crashed near East Camp McDonald and Elmhurst roads.

Ascencio only suffered minor injuries, but all three teens died instantly.

The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the victims as Jessica Ferrer, 15; Elibeth Solis Gil, 16;and Freddy Najera, 16.

Reports indicate the car was stolen from a man who lives on the 700 block of North Eastman Drive in Mount Prospect.

The Prospect Heights and Mount Prospect Crash Reconstruction teams are investigating the accident.
