Woman Rescued from Submerged Car Dies

Helen Wallace was pulled from car in cold, murky water on Friday afternoon

The 86-year-old woman who drove her four-door Buick into a retention pond in south suburban Phoenix died Saturday.

Helen Wallace was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m. at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to a spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

She'd been pulled from her car, submerged in about 10 feet of cold, murky water a day earlier.

An off-duty police sergeant began the rescue before emergency personnel from other departments arrived on the scene.
