Person Struck by Lightning at Chicago's Maggie Daley Park

A person was struck by lightning at Maggie Daley Park on Wednesday night, authorities said.

The person was hit at around 10:30 p.m. near East Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Fire officials said the person was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where their condition was stabilized.

Further details, including information about the victim, were not immediately available.

The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000, according to the National Lightning Safety Institute.

Wednesday's lightning strike was one of many dangers as storms hit the Chicago area during Fourth of July celebrations.

Thousands of people in the streets of downtown Chicago were caught by heavy downpours, rushing to public transportation and seeking shelter.

While Navy Pier's iconic fireworks show went on as planned, several suburban displays were canceled or postponed.
