A man was fatally shot by Chicago police early Saturday morning in Vittum Park after allegedly lunging at a sergeant with a butcher knife, police said.
At around 1:40 a.m., officers were responding to call of a person stabbed near 49th and Levergne Ave., according to Chief of Operations Brian McDermott.
When officers arrived, McDermott said the officers saw a person armed with a large butcher knife.
"He was tased by a sergeant at which point the offender attempted to remove the prongs from his body," he said. "He then lunged at the sergeant."
Officers then shot the man multiple times and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
No officers were injured, according to a tweet from Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern. The officers involved have been placed on administrative duties for 30 days while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates.
