One Killed in Fiery Crash in Northwest Indiana

The car hit a sign and some trees before catching fire

A woman was found dead after a fiery car wreck in Northwest Indiana on Sunday morning.

At about 5 a.m., a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse went off the roadway on southbound Interstate 65 just south of Lowell, according to a statement from Indiana State Police.

The car hit a sign and some trees at least 20 feet west of the road, where it caught fire, state police said. It was engulfed in flames by the time emergency crews arrived.

After the blaze was extinguished, investigators found a woman dead on the floorboard of the car, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at 7:20 a.m., but authorities had not been able to identify her or her age as of Sunday afternoon, according to the Lake County, Ind., coroner’s office.

The right lane of I-65 was shut down to traffic until 8:15 a.m. as crews cleared the scene.
