Olympic Gold Lands Toews on Cover of Sports Illustrated

The Hawks' captain hits the cover after his goal in the gold medal game for Canada

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews may have been passed over for the role of captain of Team Canada in favor of Sidney Crosby, but with a new Olympic gold medal around his neck and a goal in the gold medal game in his pocket, things worked out alright for the 25-year-old Toews.

That run of accomplishments was added to on Wednesday as it was revealed that Toews would be on the cover of this week's issue of Sports Illustrated in Canada (slalom skiier Mikaela Shiffrin will appear on the version available in the United States). Here is the cover:

Toews, who now has two gold medals, two Stanley Cups, and a Conn Smythe trophy to his credit in his young career, had a goal and two assists in six games for the Canadians, who romped through the tournament and shut out both Team USA and Sweden in the final two rounds to capture their second straight gold medal.

Toews isn't the first Blackhawk in recent years to appear on the cover of the magazine. Daniel Carcillo's game winning goal against the Colorado Avalanche last March landed him on the cover, and Marcus Kruger also appeared on the glossy front page for one of the magazine's NHL conference final preview issues.
