Cops: Thrift Shop Finds Rape Photos in Donated Bag; Ohio Man Charged

Gary Sovie, 48, is accused of raping a child under 13 years old, according to police

A central Ohio man was arrested and charged after several photos of him sexually abusing a child were found inside a tote bag that was donated to a thrift store, police said.

Salvation Army employees on South High Street in Columbus found dozens of Polaroid pictures in a plastic donation bin that showed a man molesting a child, police said.

Authorities identified the man to be 48-year-old Gary Sovie, because the bag also contained pieces of his mail.

Grove City police say Sovie admitted taking the photos with the little girl and that they were taken about 16 years ago, NBC 5 affiliate WTHR reports.

A police report uncovered by WTHR quotes Sovie as having told investigators, “I am a sick person. That was me. Just put a bullet in my head.”

The Ashville man is charged with raping a child under 13.

He covered his face with his hands at his Tuesday morning arraignment before a judge ordered him to be held on $150,000 bond, WTHR reports.

Sovie is seeking representation by a public defender. A preliminary hearing is planned next week as police investigate if there were other victims.
