New Extended Runway now Open

Airplanes coming in and out of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport are starting to use a newly-extended runway.

The FAA did a fly-over Thursday morning, and the new 10/28 runway was officially commissioned and is now in use.  A United Passenger jet was the first to land on the runway.

It is now 3,000 feet longer to accomodate larger and heaver passenger jets, expecially for long haul flights.  From start to end, the new runway is nearly 2 1/2 miles long.

This is the first in a series of changes in the $15 billion modernization of the airport.

The extension was completed about two months ahead of schedule, but it won't add flight capacity at the airport.  A brand new runway will open in November that should begin to ease congestion.
