Officials Investigate Reports of Mail Theft in Lake Forest

The Inspector General’s office said there have been a multiple complaints of missing mail in the area

After complaints of missing mail, officials launched an investigation into mail theft in Lake Forest.

The Inspector General’s office said there have been a multiple complaints of missing mail in the area and confirmed they are investigating.

“I sent two checks on the same day and they didn’t arrive,” said Lake Forest resident and small business owner Michael Beacham.

Beacham, who said he first noticed the issue in October, used a log from his electronic postage to see how much of his mail went missing this year.

His records showed that nine pieces of mail have disappeared since April, most of them containing checks or medical information.

“Most of these checks were business checks to our suppliers,” Beacham said. “When those don’t show up it affects our reputation.”

While the checks have not been cashed, Beacham said the allegations are troubling.

“You have to be able to trust the mail,” he said.

Officials could not confirm how many complaints they received but said they are gathering evidence and may present a report to the U.S. Attorney's office.
