A man was shot by officers early Saturday in an “armed encounter” in the West Side Austin neighborhood, police said.

The shooting happened shortly before 3 a.m. when officers responded to gunfire near 5243 W. Ohio St., according to Chicago Police Department Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Officers arrived and found a man on a porch who then ran from them, Guglielmi said. The man ran down an alley, where officers told him to stop. The man pointed a gun at them, police said, at which point the officers shot him.

The man was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police. His condition was listed as serious.

The two officers were taken to hospitals for observation, police said. They had no apparent injuries.

A gun was recovered from the scene, police said.

The officers will be placed on 30-day administrative leave, according to CPD policy. An investigation will be conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.

Body cameras were worn by the officers and were functioning at the time, according to police spokesman Al Stinites.
