The National Weather Service has confirmed that two weak tornadoes touched down in the western suburbs during Tuesday’s storms.
The tornadoes caused minor damage to trees, power lines and cars in Naperville and Downers Grove, according to the National Weather Service. They were classified as EF-0 tornadoes, which are described as “weak” with winds between 65 and 85 miles per hour.
The first tornado touched down in southeast Naperville at 7:55 p.m. on Royce Road near Whalon Lake Park and damaged several trees, one of which fell onto a power line, according to the weather service. The tornado lifted at 75th Street and Route 53, and lasted five minutes and traveled just over three miles.
The second tornado touched down at 8 p.m. in a backyard near Saratoga and Franklin streets in Downers Grove, according to the weather service. It snapped a hardwood tree which snapped a power pole and landed on a garage. The tornado then traveled north along Saratoga and Linscott Avenue before lifting.
A tree damaged by the tornado crushed a car parked under a tree on Saratoga Street, according to the weather service. The tornado lasted less than a minute and traveled a quarter mile.
