North Side Man Charged in Fatal Lake Shore Drive Crash

The man was speeding on his motorcycle and struck two people in a crosswalk when he blew through a stop light

A North Side man was charged Saturday with a crash on Lake Shore Drive earlier this week that left a woman dead and another man injured.

Charles Lyons, 20, was speeding on his motorcycle at about 10:25 p.m. on Monday in the 600 block of South Lake Shore Drive when he failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Balbo and Lake Shore Drive, according to police. When he blew through the stop light, the motorcycle struck a 25-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man as they crossed Lake Shore Drive in the crosswalk.

Lyons was charged with one felony count of reckless homicide in a motor vehicle, one felony count of aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm and various other citations, police said.

The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but she later died of her injuries, according to police. The man was transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in serious condition.

Lyons was also seriously injured in the crash and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and later charged for the crash.

Lyons, of the 800 block of West George Street, is expected to appear in bond court on Saturday.
