Armed Robbery Suspect Jumps in Lake Michigan at North Avenue Beach to Elude Authorities, Police Say

One of several suspects in a north suburban armed robbery Thursday swam into Lake Michigan in an attempt to elude police, but eventually returned to the shore and was taken into custody, authorities said.

Glenview police responded to an armed robbery at a T-Mobile about 12:23 in the 1600 block of Waukegan Road. Three men entered the store and at least two produced a semi-automatic handgun before taking the store’s employees to a back room, police said. The men took 10 to 20 phones from the store, all iPhones and Samsung Galaxy models, police said. They then fled in a silver Hyundai SUV on southbound I-94.

Illinois State Police were contacted by Glenview authorities in relation to the robbery. State troopers found the Hyundai at Diversey on southbound I-90 and began a pursuit, but then lost sight of the vehicle, state police said. The car was then found abandoned at North Avenue Beach where the suspects attempted to run away, police said.

At least two suspects were in custody, including the one that attempted to swim away from police, and a weapon was recovered from the car, police said.

No other details were immediately available.
