“Person of Interest” Questioned in NIU Homicide

A "person of interest" is in police custody in connection with the death investigation of Northern Illinois University student Antinette "Toni" Keller.

The person is currently being held by authorities out-of-state on charges of obstruction of justice and unlawful possession of a motor vehicle.  A source close to the investigation tells NBC Chicago that state is Louisiana.

Extradition back to Illinois is pending.

"In some ways it's very relieving because we were concerned about the safety of others that no other family would have to go through something like this," said Keller's cousin, Mary Tarling.

The 18-year-old Plainfield freshman was last seen Oct. 14, when she left her residence hall to work on some art in a wooded area near campus.

Days after her disappearance, authorities said they found remains in the park.  That information was not made public until earlier this week, when police said that while the remains were confirmed to be human, they were too badly burned to be positively identified.

DeKalb police said they've received approximately 210 leads in the case and are especially interested in speaking with anyone who has information about "suspicious subjects and activities, especially fires, in Prairie Park" between Oct. 14 and Oct. 18, police Chief Bill Feithen said in a release.

Anyone with information should call 815-748-8407, 815-753-8477 or Crimestoppers at 815-895-3272.
