25 Displaced After Extra-Alarm Fire Ravages Pilsen Apartment Building

A firefighter was also injured in the blaze

A firefighter was injured and 25 people displaced after a fire ravaged an apartment building in the Pilsen neighborhood.

The fire broke out in the three-story apartment building around 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1900 block of South Wolcott, fire officials said.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries in the event and was taken to Rush University Medical Center, but none of the residents were hurt, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight.

A man who worked nearby used a forklift to help rescue a man from an upper window, according to Mark Nelson, a Chicago Fire official.

Firefighters spent about two hours putting out the blaze.

The Red Cross is assisting the 25 people left without a home.

Residents of the building said a cat and turtle are still missing, but a dog has been rescued.

Firefighters continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
