NHL Realignment Would Spoil Hawks/Wings Rivalry

League considers splitting 30 teams into four divisions

The Chicago Blackhawks could be seeing a lot less of a historic rival if the NHL's new realignment plan goes through.

ESPN reports that the the league sent a memo Tuesday detailing the plan that would split the 30 teams into four divisions instead of the current six.

Under the plan, Chicago would play in the Mid-West division in the Western Conference, along with Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg.

The Detroit Red Wings would play in the Central division in the Eastern conference, which would mean a lot less games against Chicago.

The plan could go into effect next season, but needs to be approved by the NHL Players' Association and the NHL's Board of Governors.
