New Group Pushes for Legalization of Marijuana in Illinois

A new coalition wants recreational marijuana to be legalized in Illinois sooner rather than later.

The new group of stakeholders called "Legalize Illinois" is made up of politicians, business owners, clergy, unions and activists all hoping to legalize weed in Illinois.

"It’s time," said Rev. Alexander Sharp with Clergy for a New Drug Policy.

Medical marijuana has been legal in the state for years and possession of less than 10 grams of weed is decriminalized in Illinois. But making pot a legal, taxed industry has yet to gain a vote in Springfield even with Gov. J.B. Pritzker blazing a path.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin has previously said he sees no societal value in recreational use and only supports medical marijuana for pain and end-of-life care.
