Navy Pier is one step closer to receiving a face lift.
The downtown playground could be in line for new attractions and elements if the powers-that-be agree with the results of an Urban Land Institute report from the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA).
The purpose of the report is to help transform Navy Pier into "the People's Pier." The report aims to guide the new governing board on upcoming decisions in relation to restructuring one of Chicago's most popular tourist stop and redeveloping the historic site at their December meeting.
One suggestion includes moving forward with the Construction of The Great Chicago Wheel, a larger version of the iconic Ferris Wheel akin to the London Eye.
When the Childrens' Museum vacates the premesis, the report says either Kidzania or Legoland's Discovery Center should be considered as acceptable replacements.
Additionally the plan calls for an expansion of the Shakespeare Theater and redevelopment of Festive Hall that would potentially allow for an ice skating rink during the winter time. The "old and dated" feel of the Navy Pier food court while creating more direct paths for foot traffic.
According to the Chicago Tribune, if suggestions in the report get the green light and financing is secured, the improvements will be in place just in time for the 100th anniversary of the pier in 2016.
