A U.S. Navy recruit died Monday, a day after completing a capstone training event at Recruit Training Command at north suburban Naval Station Great Lakes.
Andrew Adams, of Sarasota, Fla., lost consciousness during a leisure period on Monday, according to Naval Service Training Command spokesman Lt. Matthew Comer.
Adams, 20, was taken to Capt. James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:59 p.m., Comer said.
The evening before, Adams completed Battle Stations 21, a capstone event in which recruits stand watch and practice damage control scenarios, among other things, Comer said.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating, and the cause of his death is not yet known.
"Recruit Andrew Adams was an outstanding Sailor," said Capt. Doug Pfeifle, the commanding officer Recruit Training Command, or RTC. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family. His loss is felt by all of his fellow recruits and the entire Recruit Training Command staff."
Adams arrived at RTC on Oct. 7 and was going to train to be an avionics technician in the Navy. He was scheduled to graduate on Friday, Comer said.
A 19-year-old recruit died in January 2012 during boot camp training.
