Recreational marijuana will become legal in the state of Illinois on Jan. 1, but Naperville residents will have to go elsewhere if they want to take advantage of the new law.
That’s because the City Council voted Tuesday to ban dispensaries from selling recreational marijuana in the city.
The 6-3 vote means that a recreational pot license the state had approved for a Naperville dispensary won’t be used, although the location will be allowed to continue to provide medicinal marijuana to clients, according to the vote.
The vote comes after council members heard from more than 200 Naperville residents, who were largely split on the controversial issue.

Naperville is just the latest Illinois community to opt out of the recreational marijuana bill, joining Grayslake, who outlawed recreational pot until at least 2021.
The City Council says that they are looking into a city-wide referendum on the subject, but did not elaborate on when that question will be put to voters.
