Naperville Man Accused of Stabbing Couple Ordered Held Without Bond

An 18-year-old man is accused of entering the couple's home, stealing a large kitchen knife and stabbing them multiple times while they slept

A Naperville man accused of stabbing a husband and wife with a kitchen knife while they slept was ordered held without bond Thursday.

Zachary Machnikowski, 18, is accused of entering a home on Iroquois Avenue in Naperville at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, stealing a large kitchen knife and stabbing a husband and wife while they slept in a bedroom upstairs.

"It is alleged that in the middle of the night, an unsuspecting couple was awaken by the blade of a 12-inch kitchen knife cutting through their flesh," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "No one should have to endure this type of vicious, unprovoked attack. People are entitled to the safety and security their home offers them."

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the husband and wife covered in blood in the living room. They had been stabbed multiple times in the face, head, hands and abdomen, police said. The couple was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Machnikowski's next court appearance is scheduled for April 27.
