1 Dead After Car Goes Into Romeoville Pond

It wasn't clear what caused the car to enter the pond

A 54-year-old man died at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital on Thursday night after being pulled from a vehicle submerged in a Romeoville pond, a hospital spokesperson said.

The 25-year-old female driver was able to exit the water, Romeoville Police said, and was expected to be released from the hospital's care early Friday morning.

The woman was identified as Vanessa Kwakwe of Romeoville, and the male passenger identified as Kojo Pewudie of Woodridge.

Police said the 2001 Mazda was in the area of 1400 Bluff Road when it left the road at about 8 p.m. and went into the retention pond in an industrial area.

First responders performed CPR on Kwakwe at the scene. Pewudie was located in the car by fire personnel.

The hospital spokesperson did not know the relationship between the two.

It wasn't clear what caused the car to enter the pond, and the crash remains under investigation.
