The mother of a woman killed in a Chicago high-rise fire this month is suing the building's management.
JoAnn McCoy, whose daughter is believed to have been killed instantly when she exited the elevator on the 12th floor of her building at 3130 N. Lake Shore Drive, said in a wrongful death lawsuit that her daughter would have been survived had the building installed a sprinkler system, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
McCoy also claims in the suit the building's management failed to warn her daughter of the Jan. 8 fire.
Video camera footage shows that Shantel McCoy, 32, entered the building less than five minutes before the first fire companies arrived. The fire department told NBCChicago a resident of the building was calling in the fire even as the woman boarded the elevator.
Shantel McCoy moved to Chicago less than a year ago from her native Philadelphia.
The fire started in an occupied apartment on the 12th floor, according to Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva. A man and woman who live there were able to make it out.
The fire also injured nine other people, including two firefighters.
