‘Most Haunted Place' in Illinois Named in New List

Hotels were popular picks on the new list, and Illinois wasn't left out.

Ready to get into the Halloween spirit? Travel & Leisure has named "the most haunted places" in every state.

Hotels were popular picks on the new list, and Illinois wasn't left out. Travel & Leisure points to the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago as the state's spookiest spot.

"Prohibition gangster Al Capone headquartered his operations at the Congress Plaza Hotel," the magazine writes. "His ghost is reportedly spotted at the property, especially near his 8th-floor suite."

The magazine points out, "the victims of America's first serial killer, Dr. H. H. Holmes, are also regulars. To celebrate its haunted history, the Congress Plaza Hotel hosts a 3,000-person Halloween Ball every year."

Illinoisans aren't strangers to the paranormal with multiple sites -- like Excalibur in Chicago and Resurrection Cemetery, home of the storied "Bloody Mary," in Justice -- often showing up in haunted lists next to the Congress Hotel.

As for other haunted locales in the Midwest, Travel & Leisure named these as the scariest:

-Wisconsin: Brumder Mansion in Milwaukee

-Indiana: French Lick Springs Hotel in French Lick

-Missouri: Lemp Mansion in St. Louis

-Iowa: Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca

-Michigan: Masonic Temple in Detroit
