Morning Rush Wrecked by Stevenson Crash

State trooper one of two suffering minor injuries

An Illinois State Police squad car was rear-ended as a trooper was in the midst of making a traffic stop on the outbound Stevenson Expressway Monday morning on the South Side.

The female trooper had pulled over a vehicle on the shoulder of southbound I-55 at Ashland Avenue and had a person who was involved in the traffic stop in the back of the squad car when another vehicle rear-ended the squad at 5:53 a.m., Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. Todd Borisy said.

An ISP District Chicago trooper said two people -- including the trooper -- were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. One person was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and the other taken to Rush University Medical Center.

The trooper said three vehicles were involved -- including the squad car.

As of 6:40 a.m. all outbound lanes were blocked except for one left lane, the trooper said.

Traffic was moving again as of 8 a.m., but the damage to the rush hour was already done.
