More Than 48K Customers Lost Power in NW Indiana Due to High Winds

Thousands lost power Monday in northwest Indiana due to high winds that caused outages lasting into the next day.

More than 48,000 customers lost power at one point Monday afternoon, according to power company NIPSCO.

Storms with winds above 55 mph blew through the area and mainly affected power in Lake and Porter counties, the company said.

The number of customers without power was reduced to about 8,000 customers on Tuesday, including 2,300 customers who were newly affected.

The electric company said it expected to restore power to all customers by Wednesday morning.
