“Mongo” Running For Romeoville Mayor

Former Bears star decides to try politics

Former Chicago Bears star Steve "Mongo" McMichael is trying his luck in the political arena.

McMichael, 55, filed paperwork Wednesday to enter the race for mayor Romeoville, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

McMichael, who describes himself as an independent moderate, first floated the idea of running for mayor in August. He said then he had been considering running for several years after hearing complaints from fans and customers at his Romeoville football-inspired restaurant called "Mongo McMichael's."

He also said he was doing it for his 4-year-old daughter, so he could have a say in education policy.

Current Mayor John Noak has filed for re-election. Other candidates include Fred DeWald, according to the Sun-Times.

McMichael played for three NFL teams during his football career, but most notably was part of the Super Bowl-winning '85 Bears team.

He also spent time as a professional wrestler and is currently the head coach of the Chicago Slaughter arena football team. He currently serves as a radio host for ESPN and a regular analyst on "Sports Sunday" on NBC Chicago.

The election is scheduled for April 9.
